Biking to Work

by Rocket Finance

FMF has an interesting discussion going on at his blog about the benefits of biking to work. I have biked to work on occasion and I enjoy it. I have a really nice Trek bike that my wife gave me for my birthday several years ago – of course we used an employee discount… The benefits of riding a bike to work are numerous and obvious. It is good for stress levels, good for overall health and great for the pocket book. Especially with gas prices the way they are. Anyway, here are the reasons why I can’t ride my bike to work every day:
1. I live in Wisconsin.
2. I wear a suit to work.
3. I often drive other places during the work day.
I have to admit that I have a certain amount of rebellion against elitist environmentalism that also keeps me from doing it. I am sick of all the whining about saving the planet, yada, yada – that I purposefully avoid using a bike sometimes. Two weeks ago, the mayor of our town proclaimed it “Ride Your Bike to Work Week”. Prior to his proclamation, I had actually planned to ride my bike that week, since it was still relatively cool and I only had to wear Dockers and polos all week. As soon as I saw the proclamation – I decided to drive my car all week. Silly? Yes. I just want it to be my decision and not the decision of bureaucrats and enviro wackos.

I must say, it’s a little difficult to ride to work in 115 heat (AZ) in shirt and tie….
