How to Keep the Furnace Off Until November Update
by rocketcSome of you may remember my post about how I was trying to keep our furnace inactive until the first of November. Some of the suggestions were a bit tongue-in-cheek, but many of them were practical. We really did not turn our furnace on until November 1st.
We just recieved our energy bill for the month of October. I have an online account set up with my energy company that allows access to all kinds of data about our bill. Historical comparisons, electrical/gas breakdown, weather comparisons and more are all included. I compared this year’s bill to the same time period last year:
This bill included six days where we ran the furnace – the first six days of November – days that were pretty cold. Last year’s cost for this time period was $.730 per therm. This year’s price went up 22% to $.891 per therm. If our usage had stayed the same as last year (1.91 therms per day), our gas charges would have been $54.48. However, since we did not run the furnace during the month of October, our gas charges were only $26.86 with an average of .76 therms per day. So we saved $27.62.
Was it worth it? You be the judge.
