(Possible) Job Change

by rocketc

I am contemplating a job change – not just a job change, but a complete career change. It is a very scary thing to consider with a family and a mortgage and everything else. . .

There a number of factors that are affecting this decision:

  • I need to make more money.
  • I am a hard worker, quick learner, good public speaker, decent writer
  • but my resume is not that exciting.
  • My family has no emergency fund – we are trying to start one, but nothing yet.
  • I have a master’s degree, but not in business.
  • Our mortgage is maxed out – we cannot afford to miss a paycheck.

Most of our financial challenges are a result of poor decisions that we made several years ago. Our recent decisions have been sound, but it will take us a while to turn things around. Fortunately, the school of hard knocks is a good teacher.

I am spending a great deal of time reading all of Free Money Finance’s writings about career building.

Best wishes on that. We’re kind of in the same boat. It’s not easy, but hopefully it will be worth it!

I made a rather drastic career change a couple of years ago (something I need to write about some day). It took a few years to make it happen and included finishing up my degree. It wasn’t easy, but it was absolutely worth it.

Whatever you do, I would advise to take it slow, and try to develop your new career on a part-time basis as much as possible.

A complete career change will take you a long time, probably 2-3 years – especially to get to the stage where you’re making more money – so don’t forget to keep plugging away at personal finance.

And don’t change career just for more money. You can make money doing something you like.

Thanks for the advice. I am doing my best to take it slow.

I could take it more slowly if I had an emergency fund in place. . .
