$270 Worth of credit card bonuses

February 13th, 2008 | by rocketc |

There are three great credit card bonuses available for anyone who needs a new card and a little extra cash.

The Chase Freedom Visa offers a $50 bonus after your first purchase and then over 3% cash back in a whole bunch of categories of spending. You can read more details here. If you wait until you have accumulated $200 in cash back rewards, Chase will add on another $50 and send you a check for $250. We hope to get our check sometime during the month of May. (Offer Expired)

Another card that we don’t have, but you may want to consider is the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Card. Amex has a good point reward system, but the best thing about this card is that they will credit your account with 10,000 points after your first purchase – enough for a $100 gift card. Read more about this card here.

The third card that is offering a large bonus is the Miles by Discover credit card. This is a great card for someone who flies a lot, but even if you don’t fly, the miles can be redeemed for gift cards from popular stores. Furthermore, every month in which you make a purchase, Discover will credit your account with 1,000 points – even if you spend less than a dollar. If you make a purchase every month, you will have earned 12,000 points by the end of the year – good for $120 in gift cards. Actually you will earn more points than that because you will get points for the actual dollars spent as well as the bonus points. Read more about this promotion here.

We made almost $1,500 from credit card bonuses last year – greatly aided by the Chase Freedom $250 bonus and the Amex Gold Card $250 bonus promotions that have since expired. There are still a few credit card bonuses to be had. Remember, credit cards can be a convenience as long as you only purchase budgeted items and you pay off your balance every month.

We use the Chase Freedom card and I love it! We always wait until we get to the $200 mark to get our $250 check. We should actually hit that this month or next, just in time to get another $250 in our 2007 Roth’s.
I checked out the Discover card with the miles. It sounds like a really good deal for the first year (1000 points/month). I hate to open cards I know I’ll want to cancel after an introductory offer, though. I’ll have to mention it to the hubby and see what he thinks.
    Thanks for the information :)

I am not opening as many as I used to. . . but sometimes it is nice to pick up an extra $100 here and there.

The Freedom card is very practical and definitely pays to use within your budget.

The Discover card takes a little more effort to get the value. I forgot to purchase something last month and missed a 1000 points. . . kind of a pain, but if you can work the details, a hunnert bucks is a hunnert bucks!
