Unfortunately, the federal government is actually one of the largest shareholders in these mega-banks now.
It is hard for me to believe that we got to this point. However, this concept of government control versus individual freedom is hardly new -- it has been going on for centuries (millennia even). I believe it tends to move from one extreme to another, and back again.
I hope we are nearing that turning point where it starts to swing back in the other direction. And hopefully it doesn't take anything as drastic as the American Revolution to get it turned back around.

> How a private company spends it’s money is no one’s business except for that business’ employees and shareholders.

Unfortunately, the federal government is actually one of the largest shareholders in these mega-banks now.

It is hard for me to believe that we got to this point. It's incredible that the government did not check about the bonuses before handing over the money. First, we seem to be a nation that doesn't care about our word since everyone seems to be breaking contracts. Second, I am sure that these people who got the bonuses would have been more then happy to renegotiate their contracts if they know that AIG doesn't get one red cent unless they do.

Great post! I think that goes for PT and most people who believe that government is not the answer.

By the way, I am more than willing to help anyone to the best of my ability. I can see why a lot of Americans don't see it this way though. They've been reduced to this. The govt has created a society of dependants. There's an expectation for the govt to fix things now. Not just defense and basic regulation, but in every aspect of our lives. The govt should step in and fix it.
I say, how about fixing your own problems?!?! Pull your freakin' bootstraps up like I do everyday and improve your life. Don't count on me, or anyone else. Just do it.
The govt needs to be there for the kids and the little old ladies, that's it. Everyone else needs to step up. No more freakin' excuses for needing a freakin' helping hand for your irresponsible lives.
Can it ever be turned around? Can we ever revert back to a govt that provided for the common good only on a limited basis? I wish we could, but I don't see it happening.
By the way, we're also still the most giving Nation in the world, by far. Even though we're taxed at the levels we're at we're still giving and providing. I think that says something about the American people: that there is hope for a turn around.
Great post, rocket. Thanks for letting me rant.

I agree that this is the correct way to look at it.
